Panthers upend WEM

Peterson runs for 262 yards as NRHEG improves to 2-1   By JIM LUTGENSEditor/Publisher It was a sad, somber week in New Richland. The field at the high school — like much of the town — was decorated in blue ribbons in honor of fallen Police Chief Scott Eads, and a moment of silence was observed before Friday night’s football game. None of it bothered the NRHEG Panthers. Led by Perry Peterson’s 262 yards rushing and three touchdowns, they went out and played a near-flawless

Another tough week for NRHEG spikers

It was another challenging week for the NRHEG volleyball team as the Panthers lost to LeSueur-Henderson Tuesday and Medford Thursday. Both were in New Richland. NRHEG fell to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the Gopher Conference. The Panthers won game one against LS-H 25-23 but dropped the next three 25-22, 25-17, 25-13. “We started out strong tonight, but slowly started to unravel,” said Panthers coach Onika Peterson. “By game four, we weren't getting touches on their hitters and weren't able to dig up

Panthers hold off Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity

A good time was had by everyone involved. That seemed to be the consensus Friday night as the NRHEG football team made a long road trip to Lester Prairie and returned with win No. 1, 39-31. The Panthers, 1-1, led 20-0 at halftime and 32-15 after three periods and held off an exciting fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the home team. “We gave up some big plays and let them back in the game,” said NRHEG coach Dan Stork.

Panthers humbled in football opener

Yes, there were some offensive highlights and points put on the board by the NRHEG football team. Unfortunately, most of it did not happen until the fourth quarter when the game was already well in hand. With many players on the sidelines with various ineligibility issues, the Panthers struggled in their season opener and lost 36-13 to a quality Mayer Lutheran crew Friday, Sept. 2 in New Richland.

The Minnesota agony of defeat

On Tuesday afternoon, many of us at NRHEG came up from preparing our classrooms to congregate and discuss the terrible news that had just arrived – Teddy Bridgewater, quarterback of the Minnesota Vikings, had just been injured in practice and looked to be out for at least this season. Regular readers know I’m a Purple Zealot, and I was just sick to my stomach when I found out Teddy had dislocated his knee and torn his ACL. Dreams of a Super

MCA test results reveal work to be done

NRHEG School Board By REED WALLER Staff Writer A survey of the MCA test results over the last five years shows that NRHEG still needs to do some work. At Monday’s regular meeting of the school board, Curriculum and Instruction Director Terry Engel had tables of class scores color coded so board members could compare not only the grades and years, but also the progress of individual classes through the grades. “Sometimes you get a class with a lot of bright kids,” said Engel, pointing

It’s not insanity, it’s called a job

Echoes from the Loafers’ Club Meeting My doctor says I'm supposed to cut down on sodium. Are you going to? I take his advice with a grain of salt.   Driving by the Bruces I have two wonderful neighbors — both named Bruce — who live across the road from each other. Whenever I pass their driveways, thoughts occur to me, such as: Doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results is called a job. Everyone is a good listener when you talk

Up North fishing memories? Priceless

I was lucky enough to be able to spend this past week at the cabin fishing with Trevor, my oldest grandson. We fished hard and long and I wouldn’t have expected anything different. When we decided to take this trip right before he started school I knew he would keep me busy fishing. The time it froze on Father’s Day

I go fishing with the guys to Northern Minnesota for a week; Genie goes to a ladies-only retreat in the Tree Mountains of Arkansas for a week. As you can see, we are most certainly following what that Lutheran pastor in Clear Lake, Iowa said many years ago, “A good marriage must have equality, as you are now one.” An old adage, “When the cat’s away, the mice will play,” came to mind as Genie drove away for her one-week ladies
