Indian Summer can last how long?

Birds have a built-in sense of weather change. How do I know this? On Wednesday, October 12, from 5 p.m. ‘til dark, they were waiting turns to feed at our three bird feeders, plus eating seeds on the ground. At one time I saw eight house sparrows, three small sparrows, six chickadees, two nuthatches, two blue jays, two juncos (snow birds), two yellow finch and two red finch. The next morning the low temperature at our place was 26 degrees. The

Music is a language all its own

Music has its purpose. Think of how you feel good or bad by the tempo. It brings people together. I saw a picture of the Windzor 5 band in one of our local papers. Where are the kids who knew their music way before their time? And now they were going to come back together one more time for a special performance. I am sure a number of our readers never knew they existed (because they were just kids at the time)

Panthers blank LCWM, set up title clash at Maple River

By JIM LUTGENSEditor/Publisher The NRHEG Panthers had two reasons to celebrate last Friday. They won again, for the sixth week in a row, shutting out Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 26-0 in their Homecoming game. And Maple River finally lost. It set up a battle for the South Central Blue District football championship as the Panthers finish the regular season Wednesday at Maple River. An NRHEG win gives the Panthers a share of the crown. If WEM beats Mayer Lutheran, the Panthers take the title outright. No

Panthers slay Sibley East

NRHEG prevails in offensive shootout   By JIM LUTGENSEditor/Publisher With two weeks of tragedy in the rear-view mirror, the NRHEG Panthers were finally able to have a normal week of practice in preparation for their Friday, Sept. 30 football clash with Sibley East. That’s probably a good thing. Panthers thwart Thunderbirds

NRHEG wins third straight at GFW By JIM LUTGENSEditor/Publisher NRHEG football coach Dan Stork was concerned heading into last Friday’s game at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. The Panthers did not practice Thursday, instead spending the day sandbagging and helping New Richland recover from the flood. It didn’t take them long to ease Stork’s mind. Sam Prigge hit Cole Staloch with a 65-yard touchdown pass on their first play from scrimmage and the Panthers steamrolled to a 58-8 conquest at Winthrop. “I was concerned how we would perform,” said

Say farewell to another summer

I have, once again, been spending a few days at our little cabin in the woods north of Deer River. This trip didn’t afford me the time to do much fishing. Instead I was busy working on the cabin. This brings me to a story of one of the last times I fished with my Uncle Ben. Brian, my oldest, and I had taken him to Reeds Lake for a day of fishing. We trolled for a while and then
