Funeral and basketball etiquitte

What a roller coaster ride of emotions over the past couple of weeks. Please allow me to elucidate. If you recall, a couple of weeks ago, I made mention of my ailing grandma and some personal medical problems I’d been having. Well, back on March 1, I got a call that my doctors had figured out what had been bugging me and came up with a simple solution that seems to be working so far. I was feeling good! That Friday, our

Twisting the night away

Time for another “Running Of The Words” column from this long-winded Norwegian octogenarian (some fact, some fiction). Many employers allow employees to take a personal day off with pay. The Monday after the Super Bowl is the day chosen by more employees than any other day. In the sports world, the Super Bowl was referred to as “a Yogi ballgame.” (As Yogi was frequently quoted, “It’s not over till it’s over.”) On Monday, Feb. 13, I saw and heard a lone Canadian honker

What I learned from ‘The Twilight Zone’

Echoes From the Loafer’s Club Meeting I gave my wife an empty box for her birthday. Why did you do that? I’d bought her something she wouldn't like, so I returned it for her.   Driving by the Bruces I have two wonderful neighbors--both named Bruce--who live across the road from each other. Whenever I pass their driveways, thoughts occur to me, such as: I've never seen a UFO other than an unidentified fried object. If we're visited by intelligent life from other planets, why don't

A lesson, no matter how small

Echoes From the Loafers’ Club Meeting   My wife says that I'm hard of listening, but I like to think of myself as a good listener. Are you?   I think so.   Yeah, me neither.   Driving by the Bruces   I have two wonderful neighbors--both named Bruce--who live across the road from each other. Whenever I pass their driveways, thoughts occur to me, such as: It’s odd how I sometimes pay particular notice to only those cars that are of the same brand I’m

A good scare might have done it

Echoes From the Loafers’ Club Meeting This is my lucky day. How’s that? My hat blew off and was run over by a big truck. Why does that make this your lucky day? My head wasn't still in my hat.   Driving by the Bruces I have two wonderful neighbors--both named Bruce--who live across the road from each other. Whenever I pass their driveways, thoughts occur to me, such as: It takes an antique to truly appreciate an antique. Whenever someone loses weight, someone else gains it. The

After the holiday rush is done

After the holiday rush, there seems to be a quiet time when we have to get ourselves back on schedule. When a holiday falls on a Sunday and there are two days to think about it, it can only be worse. Meanwhile, I am going to bed thinking of the things I didn’t do and trying to untangle what I did. Did I send letters, cards, and or pictures to this one and that one, or not the type of things

Is teaching a science or an art?

As we begin a new calendar year, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about education, my profession of choice. I’ve been thinking about where it’s been, where it is now, and where it’s headed in the future. I’m in my 21st year as a teacher, likely around the midway point of this career, so I’ve got experience along with a vested interest in what is to come. A few ideas have bubbled up, which means it’s likely that this could

What do you need to know right now?

“Alexa, what should I write my column about this week?” No, I don’t have the new toy that you can see ubiquitously advertised on television, the Amazon Echo. (Good luck getting one, by the way. I see on Amazon that they’re out of stock until after Christmas.) These commercials are fairly humorous and show people in situations where they need information quickly. According to the Web site, this device can sync with any smart unit you have in your home, including the
