It could not have been a better homecoming week for the NRHEG High School volleyball team.

The Panthers played well and won twice, outlasting Hayfield 3-1 on the Vikings' court Tuesday, and shutting out JWP 3-0 at New Richland two nights later.

NRHEG dispatched Hayfield 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22 on what coach Ashley Tolzman called a very special night.

"Hayfield was having a Mental Health Awareness Week," said Tolzman. "Both NRHEG and Hayfield warmed up in the same mental health shirts and listened to a great speaker with a great message. Hayfield's team also wrote each and every player a kind note and left it on our bench before we started our game. I think this was such a positive experience and am thankful we were able to be part of this. Thank you Coach Kruger!"

After starting the season 0-4, the NRHEG High School football team has fashioned a short victory streak.

The Panthers, who overwhelmed Medford 34-0 the previous week, made it two in a row with a 22-0 shutout of arch-rival Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in NRHEG's homecoming game in New Richland Friday, Oct. 6.

"We won on homecoming and took down our rival," said Panthers coach Marc Kruger. "I am very proud of this team."

And, for the second week in a row, Kruger said, "We played great in all phases."

But the defense was especially impressive, holding the Buccaneers to 95 total yards and limiting them to 35 rushing yards.

"On defense we really flew around and made big plays," said Kruger. "Jace Ihrke, Zander Flatness, and Carter Martens really were tough up the middle."

And the NRHEG offense took care of business, putting six points on the board in the opening quarter on the first of three touchdown passes by Alden Dobberstein, this one from 2 yards out to George Roesler.

It was 6-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Dobberstein threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Chrz, who ran for the two-point conversion.

Dobberstein tosses a 22-yard touchdown pass to Carter Flatland in the fourth period. Raab again ran for the conversion.

Dobberstein, a junior, had another strong all around game with 62 yards rushing and 65 passing, going 5-for-10 with one interception. Flatland caught two passes for 37 yards, Roesler two for 23.

The NRHEG High School cross country teams participated in the Grizzly Pie Invitational Thursday, Sept 28 at Janesville's Prairie Ridge Golf Course.

The girls' team finished in fifth overall with 111 points. Maple river was first with 52, followed by WEM/JWP 64, Blooming Prairie 75, USC/AC 103.

Seventh-grader Julieann Wobbrock finished in sixth place, just outside of getting a top-five finish and a pie, with a time of 22:47. Holly Bartness was 22nd in 25:16, Annabelle Petsinger 26th in 26:20, Madison Corkill 34th in 28:16 and Amelia Duryee 53rd in 32:43.

For the boys, once again Jacob Karl and Devon Nelton were strong finishers, Jacob taking second with a time of 18:58, Devon third in 19:10. Jackson McGannon placed 26th in 23:38, Owen Flatland 36th in 25:03.

"It was nice to see the girls finish in the top five as a team!" said Panthers coach Larry Nydegger. "Jacob and Devon continue to impress with their consistent efforts. getting into the top five and winning a couple of pies!"
