The funeral service for Harold “Hap” Wayne Hagen, of New Richland, will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016, at LeSueur River Lutheran Church in rural New Richland. The Reverend Brian Gegel will officiate. Interment will be in Le Sueur River Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church prior to the funeral service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Hap died at New Richland Care Center on December 10, 2016. He was 87. 

Hap was born on March 15, 1929, on the family farm located northeast of New Richland.  He is the son of Christ and Sarah (Sunde) Hagen. He attended School District 85 and graduated from New Richland High School in 1946. From 1951 to 1953, he served stateside in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On June 26, 1954, Hap married Marlene Semmann at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Owatonna. They were married for 57 years when Marlene passed away on December 27, 2011. Hap farmed in the New Richland area all his life, retiring in 1993. Hap and Marlene moved into New Richland in 2004. He moved to New Richland Care Center in July of 2009.

 

Hap was a lifetime member of the LeSueur River Lutheran Church, serving as an usher, member and officer of the church council and the cemetery board. He also served as a member of the AgStar Farm Credit Board of Mankato, Minnesota, and was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

 

He will be greatly missed by his family, children: Gary Hagen and his partner Dwight Ettel of St. Louis Park, MN; Dean Hagen of Rochester, MN; and JoAnn and her husband Edward Maloney of New Richland; grandchildren: William Maloney (23) and his partner, John Sherrard, of River Falls, Wisconsin, and Anita Maloney (19) and Maggie Maloney (15) of New Richland. He is also survived by his brother Christopher and his wife Janet Hagen of New Richland, his sister-in-law Nell and her husband Robert McCoy of Indianapolis, IN, and nine nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marlene, his parents, daughter Julie, sister Marion and her husband Gordon Larson and brother Odean Hagen. He will be remembered by many friends and neighbors for his smile, kindness and sense of humor.
