Did You Know?

1. The name of the new snow plow for this area is “Scoop?”

2. Domino’s Pizza is now in a recyclable container as a takeout pizza!!

3. There is a new means of getting around on the snow called “kick sled.” (You push with one leg to propel your way over snow on a one-runner ski).

4. My neighbor, Bud, on Marine Avenue in Albert Lea, had a birthday. The 94th one on the 24th of February.

5. The groundhog saw his shadow, thus, six more weeks of winter.

6. Pelicans stay by their mate for life. There is a pair in the water channel between Fountain and Albert Lea Lake. One of them has a broken wing.

7. The Democrats and Republicans agree to be nice to each other the 29th of February next year.

8. The Democrats and Republicans will not be nice to each other the 29th of February next year.

9. There is a coyote in the Freeborn County Fairgrounds area that howls at two small neighborhood dogs when they yip at the night.

10. The Bald Eagles are nesting in Big Island State Park, Albert Lea, and also by St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea along Eagle Drive.

11. The bigger the balloon you release in celebration, the more likely it is to get shot down.

12. The title of this column is “Fact or Fiction: You Decide.”

13. Just like many motels, There Ain’t no Room 13 or you can refer this to the same total as a Baker’s Dozen!!

Many of you readers have noticed that, for a small church, Central Freeborn Lutheran Church has a lot of fun/helping activities. For example: Valentine’s Party with Norwegian Bingo, a Bus Trip to Lutheran Night at the Twins, a Bus Trip to Church Basement Ladies, Soup and Dessert Fall Supper to benefit someone or something joining church bodies in need.

The newest activity is called “Whirlwind Youth.” This is younger parents with younger children having a fun night. The most recent was held Wednesday, February 8th in the Fellowship Hall at Central, along with pizza, pop, and an ice cream treat. They were having fun making Valentine cards for nursing home residents, plus one for each mailbox at Central Freeborn Church members.

A tip of the hat to leaders Kristine Wolff, Emily Vicrus, Kacey Pagel, and their helpers. Also, to their spouses for their support at home.

When someone says Geneva – what do you think of? Two words: Cancer and Hagen, or else Hagen and Cancer is your reply.

Many thanks to Applebee’s, Arby’s, KFC, and Main Street Family Restaurant of Albert Lea for the food coupons given to attendees at the Valentine’s Party with Norwegian Bingo held at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 4th. You helped make it a success!!

You have heard many expressions in comparing relatives. For example:

1. Cut from the same bolt of cloth.

2. A chip off the old block.

3. Like Mother, Like Daughter.

4. Like Father, like Son.

5. Like Father, like Daughter. (I witnessed a classic example of No. 5 at the Valentine’s Party held at Central Freeborn Church on February 4th. Lisa is the name of this great daughter.)

We have many stages in our lives. I’m currently at the stage of “Some Teeth Will Fall and be Replaced by Store-bought Teeth.” To buy store-bought teeth, it was necessary to see a specialist in oral surgery, namely Dr. Nancy E. McDermott.

Dr. McDermott and her staff are experts in treating old Norwegians like me. They took care of an insurance problem, plus giving me a strong cup of Norwegian coffee at the same time.

Where did I get this great treatment? At Southeastern Oral Surgery, 605 Hillcrest Ave., Owatonna, MN, 507-451-0291.

P.S.: Dr. McDermott even called me that evening to check on how I was doing. My reaction to her call was: “WOW!!”
