It’s a “great day” when this 84 year old Norwegian, a U.S. Navy spy Korean War veteran, married to the best thing to come out of Iowa, Genie the nurse (now retired) for 57 years, with two adult children (Deb in North Carolina and Dan in New York) can get up every morning.

The first thing I do after being ready for my “great day” is to put up the U.S. flag. I then come to attention and say:

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United State of America. And to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

After the pledge, I do a smart salute, a clicking of the heels, an about face, and proceed inside the house as I’m singing “I’m Proud to Be an American” (made famous by the group, “Alabama”).

Once inside the house, I enjoy my usual breakfast of hot oatmeal or cold cereal with buttered toast, maybe a sweet roll or doughnut with plenty of coffee with cream and sugar.

Then it’s time for my 2-4 mile morning hike by Fountain Lake in Albert Lea. As I’m walking, I speak to the people I meet, pick up garbage in my path, enjoy the birds, and other critters along the way as I’m working on my waistline. I’m back to our house by noon with the rest of the day at my (sometimes Genie’s) discretion.

Readers, that is my “great day.” The only exceptions are due to the virus, medical appointments, family situations, plus the weather. (Those are exceptions I understand.)

The riots are very disturbing to my “great day.” I would agree with the ide of helping the starving polar bears out by dropping any rioter off from a fly-by airplane to the polar bears.

Readers, if you agree with the starving polar bear solution, please send money to cover the airplane cost involved.

In conclusion, that is my “great day” story and I’m sticking to it!
