My thought is, “A dollar received does not have to be earned.” What do I mean? Husband and wife neighbors — she was going to be gone a few days while he stayed home. He gave me $10 not to tell on his activities while she was gone. She gave me $20 to let her know his activities while she was gone. So far, I’m $30 ahead and have not done anything to earn it. I did reply to her that I was just like Sgt. Schultz of Stalag 13 in that, “I know nothing, nothing, nothing.”

On a morning walk, I observe two people in separate kayaks going along the shoreline of Fountain Lake in Albert Lea. They tell me that every fall they start at their place in Dane Bay and kayak around the lake, picking up garbage along the shoreline before going south for four months. He tells me her kayak costs twice as much as his. She replaces it because she is at least twice as valuable to him!

Genie and I are trying to figure out what to do for the Halloween trick or treaters who come to our door. We are hoping for the government guidelines, but none so far. Our thinking-outside-the-box neighbor lives in a two-story house with a window above the second-floor front entrance. He has purchased 75 small sacks of candy that he will be putting, one per treater, in a PVC pipe from the second-floor window. There are instructions on a lit sign as to wearing a mask and social distancing to get a treat. Genie and I applaud his creativity, but we don’t have a two-story house.

If you’re like me and concerned as to how easily the virus can be spread, this is a possibility in attending church. For Central Freeborn Lutheran Church at 8:30 a.m. or East Freeborn Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, you can listen to the service in your car from FM radio at 89.3 Communion can also be self-done in your car. This type of service is in your car in the church parking lot and is subject to change as conditions change. Visitors are welcome.

The Minnesota Twins didn’t have to play the New York Yankees in the playoffs for the World Series. Why? Because the Twins got beat out by losing the first two games. The Twins got one run each game and a total of seven hits in two games. The Twins hold the record for losing the most games in a row in the World Series playoffs. How many in a row? Eighteen (18), and that is fact, no fiction. “Uffda.”

Short shorts

A. When in doubt, check it out.

B. Quote from a country western song: “Life may not have been always the greatest, but it’s been a beautiful ride.”

C. We had two mornings of 26 degrees. The second one was Oct. 2. The last hummer at our feeder was on Sept. 30.

D. The first day of Indian summer was on Monday, Oct. 5. I’m hoping the last day is in November.

E. Halloween and full moon both occur Oct. 31 this year. “Boo.”

F. October is National Roller Skating Month. Does that bring back any memories?
