A date to remember: 09-09-18. From a recent survey of readers of this column, I was told you are very, very intelligent readers. I will let you know the date to remember and you figure out why. This way, I will know the reliability of the survey.

Speaking of surveys, Casey’s is celebrating 50 years in business after starting in Ankeny, Iowa. Casey’s hired me to do a customer relations survey of their employees at their stores in Southern Minnesota on friendliness with customers at Casey’s in Ellendale. Based on my experience with two of the employees, Richard came in a strong second and Laura was next to last!

The tree leaves are turning color, the lawns are turning brown, the acorns are falling, the birds are migrating, all the baby birds are adults, the fish are on a biting frenzy, the daily temperature is tolerable with low humidity, the crop is almost ready for harvest. What does all this signal? Fall is here, is the answer. I know this for sure because on my morning walk I saw a guy with a machine that when he turned it on, the gull feathers by the skateboard park were sucked into a big bag. In talking to him, I realized he was the “my pillow” guy and he was capturing feathers to fill the pillows he sells. Thus his ad of the pillows being made in his home state of Minnesota is not fake news.

As a Korean War veteran, I attended the honoring of veterans picnic with good food, a brief program and excellent music held at the Worth County Fairgrounds in Northwood, Iowa. There were drawings for prizes. I was lucky and was drawn for a heavy duty American flag. It was sad to hear the number of Vietnam veterans affected by Agent Orange (my brother was one of the affected).

In honor of the nuns in Chicago, it was decided to have a nun throw out the first pitch at a Major League Baseball game in Chicago. It was up to the nuns to select their representative.

The day of the game, a nun, in full habit, nonchalantly strolled to the pitcher’s mound, bounced the baseball off her right bicep into her baseball glove, stepped on the pitching rubber and threw a perfect strike to the waiting catcher. It became the talk of the 2018 Major League Baseball season. Sister May Jane (the nun) has been offered a Major League Baseball contract by the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Cubs. Her position will be on the mound at all Chicago Major League Baseball games requiring a celebrity to throw out the first pitch if no other celebrity has been selected (this includes the All-Star and World Series baseball game when played in Chicago).

The terms of her contract have not been disclosed (according to the Cubs and White Sox the terms are Heavenly).

And now Genie’s latest news:

A. The good news, she received a call from 876-463-7369 identifying the caller from Publishers Clearing House. She was the second prize winner of $2 ½ million.

B. The bad news, she must pay $7,000 up front to collect due to bank FDIC regulations requiring insurance be paid first.

C. The ugly news, it was a scam. All fake news.
