Genie and I attended the graduation celebration for Calen Hoelscher. Calen was my youth greeter helper on Sunday morning at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church. In those days Calen looked up to me; now I look up to him. Calen—many thanks for the memories.

Do you know what the busiest day of the year is for the number of telephone calls? You might have been one of the callers. The answer is Mother’s Day.

Just when I thought I’d seen every Norse reminder, I was given a Mr. Goodbar, chocolate with peanuts, in a wrapper with the word “Norse.”

Lisa Mrotz is at a one-gallon mark and giving—blood, that is. (Many thanks to Lisa from many recipients.)

I received a phone call from 214-613-9117 stating that a warrant for my arrest will be issued if I didn’t contact them. So far, no warrant!

If you live within ten miles of Albert Lea, you might have seen an adult bald eagle. There are three nests in the area with young. (The adult will fly at least ten miles to find food for its young.)

Genie and I celebrated her Mother’s Day weekend. We attended the D. C. Drifters with two sister singers at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center in Albert Lea on Saturday night (the two ladies are the daughters of dairy farm parents by Elysian, MN). Sunday morning we attended Central Freeborn Lutheran Church, followed by breakfast at the American Legion in Albert Lea, then a high school graduation later in the afternoon.

By now most of you are aware of the Governor’s Fishing Opener coming to Albert Lea May 9-12 2019. Many thanks to Susie Peterson and her staff at the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors’ Bureau for making this happen. With Susie at the helm plus the help of several local organizations, success will be had (with the weather cooperating and the fish biting, the Albert Lea location should be more of a success than the last few Governor’s Fishing Openers).

With about 125 media representatives from Minnesota plus a few from Iowa, this is our chance to showcase Albert Lea. This will be a community activity with your help most appreciated.

A great example of help was brought to my attention on my morning walk around Fountain Lake by the skateboard park. Three people were fishing from the dock. As I watched, one lady caught a crappie, took it off the hook, put it in a fish trap, and re-baited while giving words of fishing encouragement to the other two. She told me at one time she owned an upholstery business in Hartland and was now retired. She would gladly volunteer as a female guide for those who wanted to fish from shore.

Two of my neighbors with good-sized fishing boats said they would guide.

One neighbor with a pontoon would volunteer to guide people on Fountain Lake.

Another neighbor would lead an outdoor service in the park.

My fellow columnist, Dick Herfindahl, and I have volunteered to help. Genie said she will help with first aid and water if needed.

Yes, there is a need for your volunteering, even though you don’t know all your abilities.
