This past weekend I spent some time at the cabin with my grandson. Dylan and his dad, my son. Brad. We had a great time fishing and doing some great bonding. We had a lot of laughs. and the guys took good care of dad and grandpa. We didn’t have many birds at the feeders but not like when grandpa is at the cabin alone.

When Brad and I arrived on Friday evening we put everything in the cabin and took a break before going to bed. In the morning, Brad fired up the mower and when he finished mowing, he took the weed eater and trimmed until he ran out of string. I also did a little mowing (heavy on the little part).

All three of us had been looking forward to taking a day trip to Spider Lake. We like to fish for northerns and with the slot limit that is in place on that lake it makes for some good fishing.  The weather looked promising for Monday, so we set our sights on that. We couldn’t find any sucker minnows at either bait shop, so we had to settle for fatheads.

Once we got to the lake, we launched the boat and started fishing. The weather was perfect, with overcast skies, a nice breeze and good temperatures. We trolled the whole time while we were on the lake. Once we started catching fish they came at a steady pace. I know that we all had a good time and each of us caught plenty of fish. We did catch and release, and we caught a variety of fish. Dylan thought that he had a big one on when he reeled in a big sunfish that he hooked while trolling. If you’ve ever caught a sunfish, you know that they are fighters. When you are trolling and get a fish on you know that they can feel larger than they are.

Around noon we headed to one of the National Forest Campsites which are free on a first come basis. The one that we went to has the easiest access and it has a vault toilet. There is plenty of room for a tent and it also has a fire ring and a picnic table. You need to find your own firewood or hunt for wood in the surrounding forest. If you are a true outdoors person you will clean up the campsite before leaving. From the looks of the campsite the last campers were, and they even left a little firewood.

After eating a good lunch and stretching our legs, we headed out for some more fishing. We started catching fish again almost immediately.  Most of the fish that I caught were on the smaller side. I have caught many fish in my lifetime and big or small, the thrill never gets old. When a fish hits my lure it’s like I’m that little kid again.

This was a great time for me because I was fishing with family, and they made it special for me. Whenever I go to this lake, I always enjoy the beauty of the lake and at the end of the day when it’s time to leave it is hard to say goodbye until the next time. I am already looking forward to my next trip to the cabin. I sure will miss Brad’s cooking and Dylan’s grilling but most of all I will miss the comradery.

Until next time: The temperatures have been going up and up which keeps me wanting to stay inside with the air conditioner. If I go outside, it will be in the early morning, to sit on the deck. I guess that I won’t be doing any fishing for a while, I don’t do 90’s like I once did.

Please show our support for the troops that are serving our country today. These servicemen and women are making that sacrifice so that we may have the many freedoms that we enjoy today.
