Wrestlers have tough opener at Faribault

By DALE KUGATHSportswriterFARIBAULT – New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva coach Paul Cyr knew that his team’s opening action at Faribault would be a stern test. He was right. The Panthers had to compete against such teams as Apple Valley, Kasson-Mantorville and Owatonna at Saturday’s Dick Shiels Invitational in Faribault. “We may have been in over our heads this early in the season,” said Cyr. “But, that’s the way we like it. We can find out a lot about our kids when you compete against good

Day after Black Friday offers crowds, deals

Well guys, my knack for disorganization came into the limelight yet again this last weekend. In my lack of planning, I realized just how much my toes definitely could have used some cotton coverage outside in the cold temperatures. So, in this less-than-ideal situation, I decided to eject my feet from my fuzzy Sketcher clogs and carefully slide them betwixt my Indian-style-positioned legs. What on earth was I doing? Watching for deer of course! No, I wasn’t trying to get back Mr. or

CAPTAIN’S LOG: The Captain and first mate avoided a catastrophe over the weekend. The Captain was off on a trip back to her hometown of Aberdeen, S.D. The first mate was at home with 11 dogs under his care. Friday noon, one of our children (dogs) walked away from the Ponderosa. “Mad Mattie” has never left home and is on seizure medication. She walked out the end of the driveway and headed into the sunset. The first mate did not think anything

Sharing chicken in a South Texas town

Echoes from the Loafers' Club Meeting"I got a new hearing aid and does it work great. I can hear everything clearly.""What kind is it?""It’s about half-past seven."Driving by the BrucesI have two wonderful neighbors — both named Bruce — who live across the road from each other. Whenever I pass their driveways, thoughts occur to me, such as: when someone says, "How stupid can you be?" I take it as a challenge. I've learned1. A child learns that silence is both

Outdoors, a little common sense goes a long way

We are already into the deer hunting season. The Minnesota DNR predicted a good hunt for Minnesota hunters. The mild winter that we experienced last year really helped the survival rate. As far as Northern Minnesota, I can definitely say that I have seen more deer this year than in past years. The deer numbers were not only good but they were very healthy looking.Although I am not a deer hunter, I actually find myself getting excited about the season. Maybe

Another football season finalized

CAPTAIN’S LOG: The Captain is probably rolling her eyes at school this morning. She purchased a new computer for the first mate a month ago and it took her that long to work up the energy to give him his first lesson on how it works. The first mate is not a good man when it comes to change. Routine and repetition is a way of life for the first mate. Finally lesson number one came. The Captain started the lesson and

How does your house rate on the conservation scale?

There are games people play that can be fun and useful. Kids seem to love finding things they can use on parents, kind of a silly little game of, "You find things to tell me that are wrong, or need correcting."During Children’s Health Month, the Environmental Protection Agency has been asking students to act as energy "patrols" and observe how energy is being used at school, as well as in their homes. This time of year, we see more lights and

Homecoming: a love-hate affair

CAPTAIN’S LOG: The Captain took advantage of the gorgeous weather last weekend to do her outside decorating for fall. The first mate had already picked all the pumpkins out of the Captain’s pumpkin patch and set them on the front step. He thought he had all of them creatively arranged, but the Captain nixed that thought quickly (as he knew she would).Squirrels have absolutely attacked our pumpkins this fall. Half of our pumpkins have an entire side eaten out. The first
