St. Peter Lutheran Church will host an ice cream social on Sunday, July 10 at 4 p.m. in Otisco. The menu will include BBQ, potato salad, calico beans, assorted pies, coffee, lemonade and ice cream.

The search is finally over for the 2016 New Richland Farm & City Days medallion.

It was found Friday by Spencer, Mollie, Libbey and Marnie Mullenbach of New Richland, hanging in an evergreen tree behind Bohlen's car wash and the city garage. The Mullenbachs claimed $50 in New Richland Bucks.

Park to celebrate anniversary this weekend

It seems so long ago, and it is.

My mother, Carole Schember, remembers Harmony Park when it was known as The Narrows at Geneva Lake. First Baptist Church of Clarks Grove held its annual picnic there. There were also family reunions held there, while others would come to the park because there weren't too many local parks back then.

The park has changed a bit since then, and she remembers that the "smart weeds" grew higher than her head, and one went through them very carefully to get to the outdoor toilets. Lawn mowers were of the push variety back then and the park area was so large it was never mowed, though it did pasture cattle. Nonetheless, it was a favorite spot on the large and beautiful lake best known for hunting, a little fishing, and cattails.

One wonders what the lake would be if it were not in the middle of an area of peat ground and not very deep. Hunters lost their lives, snowmobiles made their runs and a few people built homes on this scenic Southern Minnesota lake.

Founders of Whispering Oak honored

By JIM LUTGENS

There’s a mutual admiration society in Ellendale that exists between the town and the founders of Whispering Oak.

It goes back a long way.

Jim and Margaret Deml, Russ and Cynthia Nelson, and Brian and Jodi Wayne — most of whom grew up in the area — were honored Saturday as grand marshals of the 2016 Ellendale Days Parade.

Scott Groth, city councilman and a member of the parade committee, said the six are well deserving of the honor for having the foresight to build the assisted living facility Whispering Oak 12 years ago on the west side of town.

New Richland City Council

The fate of two New Richland properties in violation of city ordinances, 420 2nd St. SE and the building adjacent to the public library on Broadway, remains uncertain. Failure to appear at the city council meeting on Monday, June 27 by an attorney regarding the 2nd St. property resulted in tabling of the item until the next meeting, July 11.

Original cleanup deadline for the property, set by the council this spring, was May 16. Some improvements have been made, but many vehicles in violation of city ordinance remain on the property. City Clerk Wayne Billing will contact the attorney for recommended action.

When asked about the building on Broadway, ruined by fire this winter, Billing said he has been in contact with the owner, who “wants to see it cleaned up soon, too.”
