The Ellendale City Council met Thursday February 14, 2013 with all council members present for the meeting. Also in attendance for the meeting were Steve Louks, Clerk, Alice Larson, Millie Paulson, Don Anderson, Joan Lester, Pete Paulson and Al Swain.
Paulson, Municipal Liquor Store Manager, asked the council during his report if a decision has been made about when to hold Ellendale Days. Paulson reiterated to the council that in order to lock in some entertainment for the weekend, a date should be set soon.
The Waseca County Sleigh and Cutter medallion has still not yet been found. Therefore, an additional set of clues is being published. We are reminding readers that the medallion is hidden within the city limits of Waseca on public property. Good luck to all of the loyal medallion searchers!!!
The (hopefully) final clues:
The limerick clues have returned
As no winner has been confirmed
So pool all your guesses
Then we’ll see successes
Surely a quest hard earned
After 65 years, John and Lucille Nechanicky still spark the twinkle in one another’s eyes
LONG AND WINDING ROAD — John and Lucille Nechanicky have enjoyed 65 years of mostly wedded bliss. They raised four children on the 40-acre piece of land near Ellendale and have 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. (Star Eagle photo by Kathy Paulsen)
They were sweethearts, she and John
In a time long past.
They were young and handsome
When they found love at last.
Each time she saw him coming
Her heart was all aglow.
She felt she couldn't love him more
How little does youth know.

You may think that Dad’s Good Stuff is full of all the things Wayne has collected or accumulated over the years, and you could be right, but the best thing there isn't for sale. That's because it is his good wife Merlys.
It all started about April of 1959. Merlys was from Glenville and worked at McQuire’s Cafe in New Richland while Wayne was working at Lawrence Wenzel’s filling station. Wayne frequented the cafe for dinner and decided that more than the food was good; the waitress was even better. He said she was shy just like he was, but he kept talking and finally broke her down and they made a connection.
Items sought for silent, live auction
The Parent Teacher Organization of NRHEG is busy planning for the 2nd Annual Community Night Out.
This year the event will be held April 6, 2013, in the Ellendale gymnasium.
Last year the evening began with a social hour, followed by a wonderful three-course meal. The evening concluded with the entertainment of a live auction led by Col. Greg Jensen. Many wonderful items donated from our communities joined the auction list, along with other Minnesota attractions including photo sessions, various sporting events tickets and memorabilia, yard clean-up crews, a pie a month for a year, handmade items, basketball and cheerleader birthday parties, a flowering tree, custom-made mailboxes, and professional hair products, just to name a few.
New Richland Police Chief Scott Eads has issued a written statement regarding the dead cats removed from the roof of a downtown building on Friday, Jan. 23.
The statement reads:
“During the past weeks, a thorough and extensive investigation was conducted into this matter and it has been determined, based on the facts obtained during said investigation, that the carcasses of two cats found on the roof of the building located at 101 S. Broadway Ave. had been dead for weeks prior to them being deposited in this location.

The first-ever NRHEG High School Snow Week is set for February 4-9.
Highlights of the week include coronation of the Snow Week royalty at 2:15 Monday in the high school gym, a talent contest Friday at 12:30 and a dance Saturday night.
“The Snow Week activities should be a nice way to bring some excitement to the long, cold weeks of winter,” said NRHEG Student Council Advisor Sandy Schumacher. “It will be a great chance to highlight some of the talents our students have worked so hard to develop. During the days of snow week, it will be fun to see the costumes people find for the dress-up days. As far as the dance, it's nice to provide a social opportunity where our students can have fun, but a lot of variables can be kept under control. This whole event is new for NRHEG, so we hope everything goes well for all concerned. We appreciate the interest and support we are getting from people in the communities.”

Invasion of the iPads
Visiting the NRHEG school board for their January 22 meeting were Technology Coordinator Angie Aaseth with a group of a dozen eighth grade students to present a demonstration of progress on the district’s iPad Initiative. Also on hand were high school English teacher Mark Domeier and math teacher Sharon Ramaker, plus numerous parents and friends.
In May the board approved a motion to go ahead with an iPad Initiative trial program. One grade (eighth grade) would be supplied with iPads, and the technology would be integrated into their learning program. If significant results were visible in the first year, the board would continue the program one or two grades per year, ultimately to provide iPads to all 7-12 students.
Are significant results visible yet? Students, teachers and board members were presented with some impressive evidence.
