Opening-round upset advances NRHEG in section

It was a one-and-done scenario for the NRHEG Panthers, and they didn’t want to be done just yet.

The Panthers, seeded 13th among 15 teams in the Section 2AA baseball tournament, pulled off a first-round upset Friday with an exciting 5-4 triumph at No. 4 seed St. Peter.

The Panthers, 9-12, have insisted all year they’re better than their record and on Friday it looked like it as they erupted for five first-inning runs and, after giving up three in the bottom of the first, held on as senior Dempsey Tucker pitched yet another complete game. It was the fourth win in a row for the Panthers, who advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament that started Tuesday.

Softball team pummels Maple River before being blanked by Jordan

After opening the Section 2A Tournament with a football-like score, hits and runs were tough to come by for the NRHEG softball team.

The Panthers, seeded seventh among 15 teams, managed only three hits Thursday in a 4-0 loss to second-seeded Jordan, two days after pulverizing No. 10 Maple River 26-0 at New Richland.

The lineup was complete once again for the NRHEG boys’ 4x800-meter relay team, and they made the most of it.

They didn’t just re-break their school record again. They smashed it.

Tyler Schlaak, Nate Krause, Josh Fleming and John Cole teamed for second place in their specialty in last Thursday’s Sub-Section 5A meet at Wells, knocking 11 seconds off their record with a time of 8:21.19.
