The New Richland Jazz American Legion baseball team opened the season with a tough 7-6 loss at Stewartville Monday, June 6.
The Jazz took a 6-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run single by Eli Lutgens, but Stewartville answered with one in the bottom half and won it in walk-off fashion on a passed ball in the seventh.
Braden Routh finished with two of the Jazz’s seven hits. Adding one each: Lutgens, Cole Thompson, Sam Prigge, Jack Schultz, Trai Wicks. Schultz hit a solo home run.
Prigge started on the mound and pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, with four strikeouts and four walks. Lutgens went 1 1/3 innings, giving up no hits and one walk while striking out three. Schultz started the seventh and took the loss despite not allowing a hit. The Jazz committed six errors.
