Dorothy E. McIntyre, co-author of the book, Daughters of the Game - The First Era of Girls High School Basketball, 1891-1942, is seeking information on the 1924-25 Ellendale High School girls’ basketball team, coached by Mr. Bergesen, who also was the school’s principal.
In particular, McIntyre is looking for details on a gold basketball charm presented to Bergesen by the 1924-25 Ellendale boys’ and girls’ basketball teams.
The charm has the initial "E" with red inside, with 24 on the left side and 25 on the right. Below it reads, “Coach Bergesen from Boys and Girls Squads.”
The charm is unique as it was made for the players to give to their coach. The stitching and etching are clear.
What is not clear is where did the players order this charm? Jostens in Owatonna does not believe that their company made such charms in that era. Are there individuals who may have ties to the team?Ellendale and its prolific scorer Helen Johnson, are prominently featured in McIntyre’s book. A photo of the Ellendale team and their coach is included. She also was a high school teacher in Ellendale in 1957-1959. Among her students were Carlie Wagner's grandparents, Danny and Linda Wagner.
“It is quite amazing that this little charm has survived all of these decades,” wrote McIntyre. “It was found recently in New Jersey by a Michigan woman among her sister's possessions. Neither had Minnesota ties.”
