Carlie Wagner started the track and field season the same way she ended basketball. By beating almost everyone in sight.

NRHEG’s all-state guard captured two firsts and one second place as the Panthers opened the season indoors Saturday with a five-team meet at Minnesota State University in Mankato.

Wagner, a sophomore, won the high jump at 5-4 and the 55-meter dash in 7.62 seconds, taking second in the 200 in 27.7.

“Carlie is jumping in midseason form,” said Panthers coach Duey Ferber.

Wagner placed fifth in the high jump in last year’s state meet.

Senior Danielle Krueger also had a strong meet, placing second in the 400 in 62.6.

“Danielle is on a mission this year,” said Ferber. “She looks very solid right off the bat.”

Eighth-grader Katharine Lewer was second in the 800 and fifth in the 1600.

“Katharine looks great in the distance,” said Ferber.

The other Panther placewinners for the girls were Abby Crabtree, fifth, 55; and Marnie Wagner, sixth, long jump.

Fairmont won the girls’ meet with 160 points, followed by USC/AC with 116, Cambridge-Isanti 111, NRHEG 37 and GFW 1.

“We started the season off a little shorthanded, but saw some bright spots,” said Ferber.

T. J. Schiltz led the boys, placing first in the 1600 in 4:50, third in the 800 in 2:17 and fifth in the high jump.

Other NRHEG placewinners: Geoff Ramaker, second, 55 and third, 200; Ross Chester, third, long jump; 4x400 relay, fifth (Raece Johnson, Hunter Ryg, Jade Waltz, Keith Maxon); 4x800, fifth (Karter Sletten, Waltz, Tyler Schlaak, John Cole); Tyler Holz, sixth, pole vault; Johnson, sixth, 400.

“We are off and running,” said Ferber. “T.J. had a nice meet, scoring 22 points. Geoff looked good in the sprints, very quick out of the blocks.”

Boys’ team scores: Fairmont 170.5, Cambridge-Isanti 155, USC/AC 54.5, NRHEG 48, GFW 24.

The Panthers host the annual Panther Relays Tuesday, April 10 in New Richland.
