It is a great time to be a Panther! I was proud of our students who volunteered to help out the residents of Geneva last week in cleaning up the community following the March 6 tornado. Although I am not going to mention them all, a few additional highlights of what our students have been doing in recent weeks include our LifeSmarts team finishing fourth in state; wonderful Snow Week festivities; a successful 2nd Annual Battle of the Books competition at the Elementary School; the outstanding One-Act Play performance; and the exciting regular season and tournament journey for both our girls and boys conference champion basketball teams. Thank you to our students and many staff, parents, and other volunteers who make it possible for our students to have so many wonderful and meaningful experiences. As we move into the spring season and the last quarter of the school year, I encourage you to come and watch our students in action.
In my January 2017 article, I shared a brief overview of three of the six focus areas of the District’s Strategic Plan. The three areas reviewed were Student Achievement, Student Support, and Facilities. This month I provide an overview of the remaining three focus areas including Workforce Engagement and Development; Communication and Marketing; and Finance.
Workforce: This area focuses on recruiting and retaining quality educators and providing opportunities for development of all staff. We are in the process of developing processes for measuring recruitment and retention of staff. In addition, a priority objective is to put in place a meaningful staff development plan for the future.
Communication & Marketing: This area focuses on fostering partnerships with parents, communities, businesses, and organizations in support of the district’s mission and vision; and developing a multi-faceted public relations plan that is designed to promote the school district. Attention has been given to the District’s website as well as examining the most effective means of communication with stakeholders. Goals for the coming year include developing a plan to increase the number of school/community partnerships; increasing methods of promoting, advertising, and marketing all aspects of the school district’s programs, activities, and services; and increasing the percentage of parents, families, and community members involved in school-related activities, events, and initiatives.
Finance: This area focuses on preserving the district’s strong financial standing while maintaining programs, services, and facilities at maximum efficiency. Specific priorities and objectives include Board of Education adoption of a fund balance target; development a three-year budget projection; and effective communication of the district’s financial goals to all staff and stakeholders in the school district.
A reminder that the School Board conducts its regular monthly meeting on the third Monday of each month. The location of the meeting is rotated monthly between the NRHEG Secondary School Media Center in New Richland and the NRHEG Elementary School Media Center in Ellendale. The March 20, 2017, School Board meeting will be at the Elementary School beginning at 6:30 p.m.., and the April 17, 2017, School Board meeting will be at the Secondary School beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Our mission as a school community is to empower students with knowledge and skills to succeed. We achieve this by inspiring students today and preparing them for a future that will require innovation, creativity, collaboration, initiative, leadership, responsibility, and many more skills in order for them to be successful and make a positive contribution to their community and to those around them. We celebrate together in the accomplishments of our students because we are in this journey together as a school community. Thank you for all you do to support NRHEG Public Schools and our students as we strive to achieve our vision of being the school district of choice, inspiring excellence in academics, arts, and activities.
