I suppose it is because I’ve been following the falling of oak trees in an attempt to save others at Helmer Myre Park by Albert Lea. But then I do have a thing about trees.
How many times as a child did I count the rings in tree stumps to see how old the tree would be. It would tell by the depth of the ring if it had not only been a good year or a lean one but a live one.
It showed evidence of how the tree grew. Such is life. How we lived it depends on how it will grow. Nourishment comes with what we feed the roots that reach out to grow.
Kindness, caring, appreciation, and good soil in ingredients will strengthen our trees or stunt its’ growth.
Sad but true, “Roots” will stop spreading when we no longer care.
Like trees, in the middle of winter or when times become tough, our senses may numb and we forget there are others who need our help. Lives depend on how we share our spirit. Thought constructs habits and relationships that nourish the roots.
When we give value to our trees they will grow and spread out their limbs and its’ beauty will be a blessing to everyone. So true with people too.
Many of us attempt to solve our struggles by giving them a ton of energy. Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. Would it be better to become more like a tree and let the dead leaves drop, letting go of things that cause us pain and leave no room for new leaves, new people, habits, or tasks clearing our soul of diseased thoughts.
What thoughts construct habits or relationships that spread like roots and help them grow and spread? What thoughts or actions will stop the growth and die?
Looking out my window at the branches of the trees, bare of leaves, it is winter but there is promise that come spring the leaves will come again. The maple, oaks, and elms are born with the knowledge that new leaves will always grow back when the time is right.
How are we like those trees? Perhaps we should use this season of winter to renew our lives, take a rest, be aware of the quiet and access the silence to savor the peace.
One can learn a lot from the trees that have lived so long, putting out roots in every direction.
The shortest route to peace is in the struggles to give a life energy and then like pieces of a puzzle you may have to turn them around and around until they fit comfortably.
